How Does a Palletizing Robot Work ?

A palletizing robot is an automated industrial robot designed to stack finished bags, cartons, cans or other packaged goods neatly onto pallets in preset patterns. It replaces manual pallet handling for end-of-line packaging in production facilities.

Core Working Principle

The whole palletizing workflow is pre-programmed via the robot controller. Packaged products delivered from the upstream packaging line are detected, positioned, picked up, transported and placed layer by layer on the pallet automatically. After completing one full layer, the robot repeats the stacking cycle until the entire pallet reaches the target height. Once full, the pallet is conveyed away for wrapping and warehouse storage, while an empty pallet moves into position for the next stacking task.

Main Components

1. Robot Arm & Actuators: Multi-axis robotic arm (typically 4-axis palletizing robot) with high payload and long reach, responsible for large-range material movement.
2. End Effector / Gripper: Custom tool mounted at the arm tip. Common types include bag grippers, box clamps, vacuum suction cups, and combined grippers, selected based on product type (bags, cartons, cans).
3. Robot Controller & HMI: The brain of the system. Operators set stacking patterns, layer quantity, pallet layout, product dimensions and movement parameters on the HMI. Multiple product recipes can be saved for fast product changeover.
4. Infeed Conveyor: Transports finished packages from upstream packaging machines to the robot pick-up station, with sensors to detect incoming products.
5. Pallet Dispenser & Pallet Conveyor: Automatically feeds empty pallets to the working zone and removes fully stacked pallets.
6. Safety Protection System: Safety fences, safety scanners and emergency stop buttons to protect operators during robot operation.

Step-by-Step Working Sequence

1. Product Infeed: Finished packaged goods (such as FFS bags, cartons) are conveyed to the robot pick station. Photoelectric sensors confirm product arrival.
2. Pick: The robotic arm moves to the pick position, and the end gripper securely grabs or sucks the package.
3. Transfer: The arm lifts and moves the product to the target position above the pallet following the pre-programmed path.
4. Place: The gripper releases the product and sets it down accurately at the designated position of the pallet layer.
5. Cycle Repeat: The robot returns to the pick station and repeats the pick-and-place action to lay the next package, forming a complete layer.
6. Layer Completion & Next Layer: After one layer is finished, the robot automatically adjusts the stacking height and starts the next layer until the pallet stacking task is complete.
7. Pallet Discharge: Once the pallet is fully stacked, the pallet conveyor carries it out for stretch wrapping, and a new empty pallet is supplied automatically.

Key Advantages

– High payload capacity, stable continuous operation, suitable for heavy bags and cartons from packaging production lines.
– Great flexibility: quickly switch stacking patterns and product recipes on HMI for different bag sizes and products.
– Reduce labor intensity and avoid occupational injuries caused by heavy manual lifting.
– Improve stacking consistency and pallet stability, reduce product damage during warehousing and transportation.
– 24-hour continuous operation to match high-speed packaging lines.

Typical Applications

Widely used for stacked bags of food, grain, feed, pet food, powder materials, as well as cartons, cans and bottles in food, chemical, agricultural and building material industries. It serves as the standard end-of-line equipment after FFS packaging machines, VFFS machines and case packers.
