Vertical Form Fill Seal machine, commonly abbreviated as VFFS machine, also widely known as vertical packaging machine, is an automated continuous packaging equipment extensively used for forming, filling and sealing flexible plastic packaging films.
Core Working Principle
The roll of flexible packaging film is mounted on the film reel at the back of the machine. The film is pulled downward vertically through a forming collar (forming shoulder), where the flat film is folded into a tubular bag shape. The longitudinal sealing jaw seals the overlapping edge of the film tube vertically to form a sealed tube.
Next, the measured product is dropped into the bottom of the formed film tube. The horizontal sealing jaws then clamp the film tube, complete the cross sealing at the top of the finished bag and the bottom seal for the next bag, and cut off the finished pouch. This fully automatic cycle continuously produces standalone sealed packages.
Main Structure & Key Components
– Film unwinding unit: Holds packaging film rolls, with film tension control to keep film feeding stable and prevent wrinkling or stretching.
– Forming collar / former: Shapes flat film into a tube; different formers can produce pillow bags, gusseted bags, quad seal bags, etc.
– Longitudinal sealing assembly: Creates continuous vertical seal for the film tube.
– Horizontal sealing & cutting assembly: Performs transverse sealing and separates finished pouches.
– Dosing feeding system: Can be matched with multi-head weigher, volumetric cup filler, screw auger filler, liquid pump or belt feeder, adapting to solids, granules, powders, liquids and mixtures.
– PLC & HMI control system: Stores product recipes, adjusts bag length, film speed, sealing temperature and production parameters.
Common Bag Styles
VFFS machines can produce multiple pouch types by changing formers and mechanical configurations:
1. Pillow pouch (pillow bag) — the most standard low-cost style
2. Gusseted bag / side gusset bag
3. Quad seal bag / 4-side seal bag
4. Stand-up pouch (with zipper or tear notch optional)
Suitable Materials
Compatible with flexible laminated packaging films: BOPP, PET, PE composite film, nylon composite film, aluminium foil film, matte film, gas barrier film for vacuum / nitrogen-flush packaging.
